Many ATV owners enjoy riding on wet and muddy trails. This activity, called mudding, provides a unique riding experience. However, an unmodified ATV can become damaged if used on muddy trails. That’s why the experts at Reynolds Motorsports have created this guide to preparing your ATV for mudding.

Prepare the Airbox and Inlet

Your ATV has an empty chamber near the engine intakes called an airbox. It’s used to collect air before it goes into the cylinders. An airbox that isn’t already watertight should be sealed before you take the quad out mudding. Otherwise, mud might find its way into your engine.

You’ll also need to take steps to keep water out of your ATV’s inlet. The best way to do this is by installing a snorkel kit. A snorkel kit includes extended CVT inlets, extended air intakes, and outlet exhausts. It raises your inlet above the waterline so that it can “breathe”.

Move the Radiator

Most standard ATVs have a radiator located somewhere above the front rack. While this system works fine for regular rides, mudding introduces the danger of the radiator getting wet. You may need to move, tape, or otherwise modify your quad’s radiator before you leave for your trip.

Get a Winch

Mudding is fun, but there’s always the possibility of your ATV getting stuck in the mud. A winch can make extricating your ATV much, much easier. We recommend unspooling the winch before each ride to do a quick check on the line’s integrity.

Grease Up Your ATV's Parts

Muddy water can cause damage to your ATV’s internal circuitry. That’s why many mudders recommend applying a coating of marine grade dielectric grease onto these components before the ride. Spraying WD-40 on your ATV’s throttle, hand grips, and brake levers will help protect them from mud.
